What Are Attachment Therapy and Psychodynamic Work?
Attachment therapy is rooted in the understanding that our earliest relationships, with caregivers, family, the people who shaped our world before we had words for it, create a kind of blueprint. That blueprint influences how we connect with others, how we handle conflict, how we feel about ourselves, and what we expect from the people we love.
When those early experiences were difficult, inconsistent, or painful, the blueprint can create patterns that feel automatic and hard to change. Even when we desperately want to.
Psychodynamic work is a related approach that explores the deeper roots of who we are including the experiences, feelings, and beliefs that live beneath the surface of our awareness. Together, these approaches help us understand not just what’s happening, but why and from that understanding, build something new.
Who Is This For?
This work tends to be especially meaningful for people who:
- Notice recurring patterns in their relationships or emotional responses
- Struggle with self-worth, people-pleasing, or fear of abandonment
- Had difficult, unpredictable, or emotionally unavailable caregivers growing up
- Feel like they’re carrying something from childhood they can’t quite name
- Want to understand themselves at a deeper level not just manage symptoms
If you’ve ever thought “I know why I do this, I just can’t seem to stop”. This kind of work can help bridge that gap.
What Does a Session Look Like?
This work is often more reflective and exploratory than structured skill-building. We might spend time talking about a recent relationship dynamic and trace it back to something older. We might notice a pattern together and get curious about where it started.
I’ll ask questions that invite you to look a little deeper not to dredge up the past for its own sake, but because understanding the roots of something is often what finally allows it to shift.
This kind of work takes time, and it’s some of the most meaningful work I do. Clients often describe a gradual but profound sense of things becoming clearer, of feeling less at the mercy of patterns they never chose.
