What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a research-backed therapy that helps the brain process difficult memories and experiences that feel stuck. The kind that still carry an emotional charge no matter how many times you’ve thought about them or talked them through.
During EMDR, we work with specific memories or experiences while using gentle bilateral stimulation, often side-to-side eye movements, which helps the brain reprocess those experiences in a new way. Over time, memories that once felt overwhelming begin to lose their intensity. They don’t disappear, but they stop having the same hold on you.
EMDR doesn’t require you to talk through every detail of what happened. For many clients, that’s one of the things they appreciate most about it.
Who Is EMDR For?
EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma and PTSD, and it remains one of the most effective approaches for those experiences. But it’s also widely used for:
- Anxiety and panic
- Depression rooted in past experiences
- Grief and loss
- Phobias
- Low self-esteem tied to specific memories or beliefs
- Childhood experiences that continue to affect adult life
If you carry something from your past that still feels present. Something that shows up in your body, your relationships, or your sense of self. EMDR may be worth exploring.
What Does an EMDR Session Look Like?
EMDR sessions are structured, but they don’t feel clinical or cold. We’ll always begin by making sure you feel grounded and prepared before we move into any processing. The early sessions focus on building safety. Getting to know you, understanding what you’d like to work on, and learning some simple tools to help you stay regulated if things feel intense. When we move into active EMDR processing, I’ll guide you to bring a specific memory or feeling to mind while following a gentle back-and-forth stimulus. This might be eye movements, tapping, or another form of bilateral stimulation. You stay in control throughout. We check in regularly, and you can pause or stop at any time. Many clients notice shifts within a handful of sessions. Others work with EMDR over a longer period, especially when processing layered or complex experiences. We’ll move at whatever pace feels right for you.
