What is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a form of therapy where a small number of people meet regularly with a therapist to work through shared experiences, challenges, and goals together.
It’s not a support group, and it’s not group coaching. It’s real, structured therapy, guided by a licensed clinician, that happens in a relational setting. And that setting is part of what makes it so powerful.
There’s something that happens when you share something you’ve been carrying alone and hear someone else say “me too.” It shifts something. Group therapy creates that experience intentionally, in a safe and confidential space.
Who Is Group Therapy For?
EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma and PTSD, and it remains one of the most effective approaches for those experiences. But it’s also widely used for:
- Want connection alongside healing
- Feel isolated in their struggles and want to know they’re not alone
- Are working on relational patterns and want to practice in a real relationship setting
- Want to complement their individual therapy with something more communal
- Are navigating a shared life experience, grief, anxiety, major transitions?
If you carry something from your past that still feels present. Something that shows up in your body, your relationships, or your sense of self. EMDR may be worth exploring.
What Does a Group Session Look Like?
Groups meet on a regular schedule, typically weekly, in a small, intimate setting. Sessions are guided by me, but shaped by the people in the room. There’s structure, but also space for what arises organically.
Confidentiality is foundational. What’s shared in the group stays in the group, always.
New members are thoughtfully integrated, and every group has its own rhythm and culture. If you’ve never done group work before, the first session almost always feels more comfortable than you expected.
